Geboren 1964 in Traverse City, Michigan, USA. Lebt und arbeitet in Wien seit 1989.

Studium der Germanistik am Amherst College, Massachusetts (BA, 1987) und der Kunstgeschichte an der Universität von Wien (MA, 1999). Zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Österreich, den USA und Großbritannien.

Der physische, praktische Teil meiner Arbeit spielt sich im Archiv ab. Dazu gehören das Sortieren, Suchen und Sehen. Konzeptuell dreht sich die Arbeit um die Ideen des Verlustes, der Zerstörung und die begleitenden Themen des Vermächtnisses, Erbes und der Bestandsaufnahme. In einem Satz: ‚das, was bleibt‘. Dinge - oft fotografisches Material - die übersehen, als unbedeutend eingestuft und/oder trivialisiert wurden, spielen eine wichtige Rolle - und sie erneut zu präsentieren ist, was ich als ihre Rehabilitation betrachte. (…) Obwohl ich nicht in existierende Erzählungen eingreife, benutze ich sie dennoch, um neue Geschichten zu erzählen.

Michael Huey

Born 1964 in Traverse City, Michigan, USA, lives and works in Vienna, Austria since 1989.
Huey holds a B.A. in German studies, Amherst College, Massachusetts, 1987 and an M.A. in art history, University of Vienna, 1999. Numerous solo and group shows in Austria, USA, UK.

The physical, hands-on part of my work takes place in the archive. It involves sorting, searching, and seeing. Conceptually, the work revolves around the idea of loss...disintegration...and the attendant themes of legacy, inheritance, and inventory. In a phrase: ‘what remains’. Things – often photographic materials – that are overlooked, considered insignificant and/or trivialized play an important role, and presenting them anew is part of what I consider their rehabilitation. (...) Though I do not intrude into existing narratives, I nevertheless make use of them to tell new stories.
