Tina Ribarits, Mimesis, Galerie Reinthaler 2021/22

Tina Ribarits (* 1981, AT) ist eine in Berlin und Wien lebende Künstlerin. Sie schloss ihr Studium an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien ab und erhielt 2013 das Österreichische Staatsstipendium für Fotografie. Zudem absolvierte sie Stipendienaufenthalte in London (2010), New York (2012) und Rom (2017). Sie stellte in Einzel- und Gruppenschauen aus, u.a. in Österreich, Deutschland und Großbritannien.

Ribarits arbeitet in einer Vielzahl von Medien zu Themen der Ökologie, (de)kolonialer und feministischer Geschichte, Exotismus und Nicht-Anthropozentrismus. Die Künstlerin kombiniert Videos, Fotos, Zeichnungen und skulpturale Elemente in installativen Set-Ups. Ihre jüngsten Arbeiten sind das Ergebnis ihrer Forschungsreisen zu biologischen Forschungsstationen in tropischen Regenwäldern. In diesen Installationen kartografieren gefundene und gefertigte Objekte wie Äste, Steine und Seile den Ausstellungsraum und verweisen auf eine Wildnis, die sowohl widerspenstig als auch verwoben ist. Die gerahmten Aquarellzeichnungen, die klassisch an der Wand hängen, verweisen eher auf eine malerische Ästhetik der Naturalisten des 19 Jahrhunderts. Der exotisierende Blick der Betrachter*in wird jedoch von Vögeln, Schlangen und Pflanzen erwidert - ihre eigene Objektivierung herausfordernd. In ähnlicher Weise versuchen konzeptionelle Fotografien wie Kamerafallen-Aufnahmen neu zu verhandeln, wer beobachtet und wer eingefangen wird. In diesen Installationen sind ihre Videoprojektionen Fenster in die Ferne - Einblicke in das Ober- und Unterholz des Waldes, die den Akt des Sehens und Festhaltens hinterfragen. Ribarits lotet hierbei die mögliche Rückeroberung von Territorien, der Solidarität mit mehr-als-menschlichen Lebewesen und weniger schädlichen Kosmologien aus.

Tina Ribarits (*1981, AT) is an artist based in Berlin and Vienna. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and received the Austrian State Scholarship for Photography in 2013. Furthermore she was selected as artist in residence for stays in London (2010), New York (2012) and Rome (2017). She exhibited in solo and group shows in amongst others, Austria, Germany and the UK.

Ribarits works in a variety of media on topics of ecology, (de)colonial and feminist histories, exoticism and non-anthropocentrism. Ribarits combines videos, photos, drawings and sculptural elements in installative environments. Her recent works are the result of her research trips taken to biological field stations in the tropical rainforest. In these set-ups found and crafted objects such as branches, stones and ropes map the exhibition space, gesturing towards a wilderness both unruly and interlinked. The framed watercolor drawings classically hung on the wall hint more towards a painterly aesthetics of 19th century naturalists. The viewers exoticizing gaze, however, is met by bird, snake and plant - challenging their own objectification. Similarly, conceptual photographs such as camera trap images seek to renegotiate who is watching and being caught. In these installations her video projections are windows into the far distant - glimpses in the over and understory of the forest, inquiring into an act of looking and retaining. She seeks to re-negotiate the possibilities of unclaiming territories, solidarity with more-than-human-beings and less harmful cosmologies.
