Wir freuen uns sehr, bei der ersten Ausgabe der ASTORIA ARTSHOW Ömer Faruk Kaplan in der ZONE 1 – NEW POSITIONS zeigen zu dürfen, kuratiert von Casandra Hermann.
Das neue Messe- und Ausstellungsformat vereint 80 Galerien aus 20 Ländern in der Astoria Garage – Europas ältester Hochgarage, erbaut 1923 im Stil der Neuen Sachlichkeit.

„Indem Ömer Faruk Kaplan die Holzstufen senkrecht und mit gleichem Abstand nebeneinander an der Wand installiert, verfremdet er die gewohnte Perspektive auf sie. Beim Abschreiten entsteht ein neuer, gleichsam musikalischer Rhythmus von dicht zu licht, ein anderer Blick auf die Stufen und ihre Geschichte, die sich durch jahrzehntelange Benutzung in das Holz eingeschrieben hatte. Aus ehemals funktionalen und kaum beachteten Teilen wird eine Skulptur – und die Bewohner und Besucher des Hauses, die durch ihre Schritte über Jahrzehnte den Objekten ihre finale Form gegeben hatten, wurden nachträglich zu Bildhauerinnen und Bildhauern dieses Werks.“ - Bernhart Schwenk, Pinakothek der Moderne (Textauszug) -
Ömer Faruk Kaplan (*1991, München) studierte an den Akademien der Bildenden Künste in München (Florian Pumhösl) und Wien (Christian Schwarzwald, Judith Huemer) und schloss beide Studien mit Auszeichnung ab. 2026 wurde er für die Shortlist des STRABAG ART Award nominiert. Das PARNASS Magazin nahm ihn 2024 in seine UP&COMING Watchlist auf.

We are delighted to present Ömer Faruk Kaplan in ZONE 1 – NEW POSITIONS, curated by Casandra Hermann, at the inaugural edition of the ASTORIA ARTSHOW.
This new art fair and exhibition format brings together 80 galleries from 20 countries in the Astoria Garage - Europe’s oldest multi-storey car park, built in 1923 in the New Objectivity style.

“By installing the wooden steps vertically on the wall, side by side and at equal intervals, Ömer Faruk Kaplan disrupts our familiar perspective on them. Walking alongside the installation creates a new, almost musical rhythm, shifting from density to openness, and offers a different view of the steps and their history—a history inscribed into the wood through decades of use. Once functional and barely noticed elements, they have now become a sculpture. The residents and visitors who, through their footsteps over the course of decades, gave the objects their final form have thus retrospectively become the sculptors of this work.”

Ömer Faruk Kaplan (b. 1991, Munich) studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Munich (Florian Pumhösl) and Vienna (Christian Schwarzwald, Judith Huemer), graduating with distinction from both. In 2026, he was shortlisted for the STRABAG ART Award. In 2024, PARNASS magazine included him in its UP&COMING Watchlist.
